What is Access Control System

Access control is the selective restriction of access to a place or other resource. Access control allows authorize or restricting unauthorized entry into organization, property, building or any secured premises. An access control system determines who is allowed to enter or exit, where they are allowed to exit or enter, and when they are allowed to enter or exit.

In Starting Phase access control can be achieved by a human (a guard, bouncer, or receptionist), through mechanical locks and keys. But these systems have their own limitation like it not provides any kind of access records, if key transferred or copied then anyone get easy access. When key or key holder lost then any one can enter in restricted area and to avoid this must have to replace locks or make duplicate key.

Presently to meets modern security concepts access control uses computers to solve the limitations of mechanical locks and keys. A wide range of credentials can be used to replace mechanical locks and keys. So when access is granted, the door is unlocked for limited time and the transaction is recorded. When access is denied, the door remains locked and the attempted access is recorded. It also generates alarm if the door is forced open or held open too long after being unlocked.

Different types of access control systems available in market like Single door, Multi-door controller, Rack controller, Elevator controller etc. which is completely based on requirement and environment where they going to used.
